A practice routine that works

Random experimenting feels fun, but focused practice creates audible progress.

Skill: disciplinePractice time: 30 minutesBest with: a small crate

The 30-minute structure

This turns practice into a loop: attempt, listen, adjust, repeat.

  1. Five minutes: listen and count phrases.
  2. Ten minutes: repeat one transition.
  3. Ten minutes: record three attempts.
  4. Five minutes: write one note about what failed.

What to measure

Measure something you can hear: did Track B start on phrase, did the levels match, did the bass get messy, did the energy drop, did the transition feel rushed? Avoid vague notes like "bad mix."

Common mistakes

  1. Practicing too long after your ears are tired.
  2. Switching songs every time the mix gets hard.
  3. Never recording because you do not want to hear mistakes.

Put It Into Practice

Assignment

Do the 30-minute routine three times this week with the same two songs. Your goal is not variety. Your goal is to hear one transition improve.
