What beatmatching really means
Beatmatching has two parts: the tracks need to be close in tempo, and the beats need to land together. Software can help with tempo. Your ears still need to hear drift. Sync is not cheating when used as a learning tool, but it does not replace listening.
How to practice
- Pick two tracks with clear kicks.
- Set both to the same displayed BPM or very close.
- Start Track B on beat one of a phrase.
- If the beats flam or gallop, nudge Track B slightly earlier or later.
- If it drifts again every few bars, adjust tempo a tiny amount.
Common mistakes
- Making huge tempo changes when a small nudge would fix the problem.
- Watching stacked waveforms without listening to the speakers or headphones.
- Practicing on songs with loose live drummers before you understand steady-grid tracks.
Put It Into Practice
Assignment
Use two tracks within 3 BPM. Start them together and try to keep them aligned for 32 bars without changing songs. Your only job is to hear drift and correct it gently.
